Truth about grocery flyers

From The Simple Dollar:

The Truth About Grocery Store Flyers
June 17, 2009 @ 2:00 pm - Written by

However, things aren’t quite that simple - you can’t just trust the store flyer.
Over the last several months, I’ve been keeping track of prices on several key items that we buy all the time. Garbage bags, fresh spinach, toilet paper, grapes, Pepperidge Farm goldfish crackers, and so on.
I know what the typical price is on these items - I even have a small price list that has the usual prices for them.
So, a few weeks ago, when I took a long look at the flyers from my grocery stores of choice, I happened to notice that some of the “big sales” listed in the flyer weren’t on sale at all. The price was exactly the same as what I usually paid.
What gives? I did some research - calling and emailing a few people I know in the grocery business - and I came up with a few interesting facts about grocery store flyers.
For starters, a large portion of the spots in a grocery store ad are actually paid placements by the product manufacturers. That “sale” on Coca-Cola? It’s likely that Coca-Cola - or a local distributor - paid your grocery store to have their product inserted into the ad. The price of that “sale” item is often unchanged from the normal price - the only reason it’s in the flyer is to put a few more bucks in the pocket of the grocery store itself.
Why would a company pay for such placements? According to Tod Marks of Consumers Union, a mere mention of a product in a grocery store flyer can send sales of that product up as much as 500%. Thus, in many cases, the small cost of the product mention in the flyer can easily be recouped by a big bump in sales.
Another technique often used in flyers is quantity-based tricks. Let’s say, for example, that you typically buy a quart of cottage cheese for $1.49. In the flyer, you might notice that cottage cheese is on “sale” for $0.99 - but it turns out that this is the pint container, not the quart. Without careful reading, one might head out to the grocery store and grab that $0.99 “bargain” without thinking about it, actually paying more per pint of cottage cheese.
These two factors lead to the real question: how can you trust grocery store flyers at all? Here are some tactics I’ve found that work well for finding the real deals in the flyers.
First, ignore “brand name” products. Quite often, these are placed by the large food companies and don’t actually reflect much of a bargain at all. Just skip right past them. Occasionally, one of these might be a “loss leader,” but you can usually only find them if you’re really good at filtering out all of the noise.
Second, focus on the fresh items. The items that are fresh - fresh produce and fresh meats - are rarely branded at all. These items tend to be the real sales in the flyer (but not always - you should always have a good grasp on what the real prices are).
Third, “quantity” sales are often tricky. Let’s say you see some particular item on sale - 2/$5. That could mean a lot of things - it might mean that the items are actually $2.50 each and you don’t actually need to buy two items to get the discount, or it might mean that just buying one item will cost you $3.29 or so - which isn’t really a deal at all. Read the fine print and don’t just immediately buy more than you need or assume it’s a great deal.
Finally, know your quantities. Sometimes, “sales” loudly proclaimed in a flyer are for very small sizes. Once you’re actually in the store, however, you’ll find that the the larger size is actually the better deal, even though it’s not on “sale.” Sales on small quantity items almost always indicate something that’s not really a bargain (unless you can couple a coupon with it and get it for free).
Flyers have a lot of good deals, but there’s a lot of noise as well. Figure out how to filter through the noise and you’ll save yourself a lot of money on groceries.

Another site for grocery savings

Get groceries for less. You might already be a pro at tracking down coupons on the Web, but if you haven't yet discovered the power of online comparison-shopping sites, you're missing out on serious savings. Sundaysaver.com lets you compare deals at grocery stores, and groceryguide.com allows you to search your neighborhood stores by product, then produces a price list so you can plan where to go for each item. Although you might think it's a hassle to shop for groceries at different stores, one study shows that if you spend about $75 a week on groceries, you could lop approximately $25 off your bill just by snagging sale items at multiple stores.

KFC free chicken offer update...

I just wanted to let you all know that KFC is no longer accepting the free meal coupons. This is a little frustrating, especially if you didn't even get a chance to use yours.

From the Kentucky Fried Chicken website - http://www.kfc.com “We are so sorry, but due to the overwhelming response to our FREE Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal coupon, we can no longer redeem the free coupon at this time. But we will honor our commitment to giving you a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal. Please visit a participating KFC restaurant for a rain check form. Complete the form, attach your original coupon , and give it to the KFC restaurant manager or postmark per the form’s instructions, by May 19, 2009, and we’ll send you a rain check for your free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal at a later date, plus a free Pepsi with our compliments. Your participating KFC restaurant will provide you with the form you need.” Please note that the redemption periods of the rain checks will vary. All other terms and conditions of the original free Kentucky Grilled Chicken coupon will apply.

On a positive note KFC is offering this additional promo: The first 200 people to register on KFC.com each day will receive $10 in KFC gift checks which may be used toward the purchase of KFC’s new Kentucky Grilled Chicken for their mothers. This offer is for a five-day period, May 6 through May 10, beginning each day at noon EST and ending at 4 p.m. EST! If you want to get in on this deal, then I would highly recommend registering exactly at noon EST. Remember it's ONLY available to the 1st 200, which means they will go FAST! The first digit of a MFC coupon

Everyone wonders what the numbers on a manufacturer's coupon stand for. In the BeCentsAble workshop, we discuss the strategy of knowing if you can use the coupon that you have on the item(s) that you'd like to buy. But, what does the 1st digit stand for?

If the set of numbers on a coupon start with the number "5", the coupon with double and/or triple, unless the words "do not double" are printed on the face of the coupon.

If the set of numbers on a coupon start with the number "9", the coupon will not double and/or triple.

Join forces to save money

Everyone has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you know the best ways to save money (because you've learned great foundational skills at a BeCentsAble workshop), but you're not sure how to invest the money that you've been able to cut from your budget. Maybe you know someone that is very knowledgeable about online stock or investing tools, but don't have an adequate amount of money to start investing. Why not form a group to learn more and encourage those around you?

Investment groups and money clubs have been around for years. Just because the economy isn't perfect right now, doesn't mean that it's not a great time to learn how to manage money or even invest. Even if you don't know people that are willing to join a group, meet interested parties on mom's forums, on parent sites, or in your local neighborhood.

Try something new

It's easy to get overwhelmed with all of the savings info that's available.
My recommendation is to not try to find every available website or blog, not download every coupon, and not visit every store in your area. Start slowly -
If you've never downloaded a coupon on your coupon; download a coupon.
If you've never shopped in a drug store; select 1 store and make a point to shop there.
If you've never taken the time to get organized, which means that you forget coupons or have expired coupons; get organized.

There is so much to learn and so much money to save! You can't save unless you know what will work best for your lifestyle. As always, I'm here to help!

Walgreens cares for the uninsured

Walgreens giving free care to jobless and uninsured
Tue Mar 31, 8:57 am ET

NEW YORK – Drugstore operator Walgreens will offer free clinic visits to the unemployed and uninsured for the rest of the year, providing tests and routine treatment for minor ailments through its walk-in clinics — though patients will still pay for prescriptions.
Walgreens said patients who lose their job and health insurance after March 31 will be able to get free treatment at its in-store Take Care clinics for respiratory problems, allergies, infections and skin conditions, among other ailments. Typically those treatments cost $59 or more for patients with no insurance.
Hal Rosenbluth, chairman of the Take Care Health Systems division, described the plan as something close to an experiment: He said Walgreens isn't sure of patient demand or how much providing the services might cost the company.
It's likely to generate more attention for the clinics, however. Rosenbluth said a typical Take Care patient tells eight other people about his or her experience. So far, about 30 percent of Take Care patients were new customers to Walgreens.
The program is expected to last through the end of 2009. Walgreens runs 341 Take Care clinics in 35 markets around the country, including Chicago, Atlanta, Miami and Cleveland.
Free services will be offered only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walgreens said it will not offer free checkups, vaccinations or other injections because it is focusing on providing services patients might otherwise get at an urgent-care center or even an emergency room.
Patients must present proof they are unemployed, including a federal or state unemployment determination letter and an unemployment check stub. They will have to sign a form at the clinic saying they have lost their jobs and health benefits. If they find a new job or get new health insurance, they will no longer be eligible for free care.
Spouses and children are also eligible for free services if they don't have insurance of their own.
Medical lab operator Quest Diagnostics is participating in the program by offering free tests for step throat and urinary tract infections.
Walgreens bought the Take Care clinics in May 2007. Take Care says it has seen about 1.2 million patients since its launch in November 2005 and estimates that up to 30 percent of them were uninsured.

Different Way of Thinking...

An issue has come up several times recently that I wanted to talk about here...
This topic is covered in more detail during my BeCentsAble workshops, but let's just briefly discuss...
A tip for saving money is to change your way of thinking. It's an easy thing, but can be difficult because we're used to thinking the same way that we've been trained for our entire lives - instead of planning for your meals and then shopping, look for the weekly deals and then plan your meals. Once you learn sale cycles, all you'll have to do is shop for "extras" anyway.
Just think about it and if you want more info, just let me know.

Health tips

EATING FRUIT
We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.
What is the correct way of eating fruits? IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.
If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.
FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.
In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.
So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat water-melon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!
Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.
There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.
When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.
But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it.You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!
KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.
APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.
STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.
ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.
WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system.. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.
GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can U believe this??For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks
HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!)
Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive...
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this...It could save your life!!

Let's say it's 6.15 pm and you're driving home. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

'HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE':
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the personwhose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again..
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. This allows the heart attack victim to get to a hospital.

I did not write this article, but there are several tips that are worth taking into consideration.
Please read and decide how you'd like to move forward

Networking

Never underestimate the power of networking. I've been fortunate to attend two very different, but equally important networking events recently. One was to distribute bags of material from various businesses to local moms. The other was more of a traditional networking meeting, where individuals presented their businesses to others within a 2 minute time span.

Both events provided a valuable opportunity to not only present my business as a Savings Educator, but to also think about how I present myself. I write this to remind everyone that we're constantly networking, whether we realize it or not. When we meet teachers, day care providers, church members, strangers that we pass on the sidewalk, or our neighbors. Every situation is an opportunity to make a positive impression on another's life. Never overlook how your life can effect another's. Be a positive change and make a positive difference. Smile. It may be just what's missing from someone's life.

One word of caution: the site appears to be maintained by "regular people (like you and me, not by a company)", so the special offer posts may not get updated when they expire or limits have been met. Still a great site to check out!

The clothes are great for other events too, from family reunions, to Easter outfits. There's no charge for stains - just call if your child gets one and Gagas will tell you how to pretreat it. Sizes - newborn to girl's size 16 and up to size 20 for boys!

5 smart ways to save money at the supermarket

Content Provided By AOL
AOL (ARA) - What's a shopper to do when the prices of grocery staples are going through the roof? Erin Gifford, grocery savings expert with Shortcuts.com, offers five ways to save serious money at the supermarket this week.

1. Keep Your Eyes Peeled for Coupons: There are many more places to find coupons today than the Sunday paper. Online coupon Web sites let you select the coupons you want to print and cut out to use at your grocery store. Also, frequent the Web sites of your favorite brands for printable coupons and sign up for special coupon offers by mail or e-mail.You can even go online to order coupons at a site like www.TheCouponClippers.com for a few cents each. This is great if you want to stock up on sale items and need more than one coupon to use with each item you buy.

2. Maximize Your Store Loyalty Card: If you don't have a store loyalty card, sign up for one. It's one of the easiest ways to save money on groceries each week. Many loyalty programs send extra coupons in the mail or e-mail, and even offer discounts on the food bill once a certain amount is spent in the store. Some loyalty card users can also take advantage of electronic coupons, like those at www.Shortcuts.com. These coupons can be loaded onto store loyalty cards and automatically redeemed at checkout. No printing or clipping necessary.

3. Be a Strategic Coupon User: Some retailers, such as Target and Walgreens, offer special coupons that can only be used at their stores. You can use these coupons along with manufacturer's coupons on the same product for extra savings. By doubling up you can sometimes get products for free or nearly free. Some grocery stores also double or triple coupons and often only on certain days of the week. Check your local store and shop the days when they're multiplied for maximum savings.

4. Look for Rebates and Free-bates: A great way to save is through rebates and free-bates, which refund you the full purchase price. You can make money in some cases when you use a coupon and then get a full price free-bate. The ads for these deals can lure you in so don't forget to send in the forms.

5. Read Money-Saving Blogs: Check out money-saving blogs that share with readers shopping tips and advice, coupons, free samples and round-ups of the best deals at local grocery stores. These Web sites have taken the work out of matching coupons with great sales to help you save money. Two to check out are www.BeCentsAble.net and www.CouponCravings.com

Present in order to save

Be sure to present your store loyalty cards when you get to the cash register, BEFORE the cashier starts to scan your items. If not at the beginning, definitely BEFORE presenting any coupons. Some stores may not double coupons if the loyalty card has not been scanned PRIOR to scanning the actual coupons. This a lesson that I learned the hard way, but I appreciate the Customer Service Rep that helped resolve the issue and give me the doubled coupon value.

If you don't have store loyalty cards from stores that offer them, you're giving away money! It's worth the time that it takes to complete the free application.

Buyer Beware - Circuit City

"Stories are pouring in from outraged shoppers who thought they could get a great deal on equipment from Circuit City as part of its fire sale liquidation. The problem: Circuit City won't let you open sealed boxes to inspect merchandise before you take it home -- and all sales are final. No returns. No exchanges. That's not so great if the gear is hopelessly broken.
One Minnesota family spent $1,500 on a 50-inch plasma TV and found the glass shattered once they got it home. The store refused to take back the TV and instead referred the issue to Circuit City headquarters, where no one answered the phone. The family is checking with Panasonic, the manufacturer, to see if it's covered under warranty.
A similar problem happened to a Boston customer, who paid $1,100 for what turned out to be a totally busted Samsung TV. She got a refund from her credit card company, but only after a local TV station made inquiries on her behalf. Be warned: Consumerist says that getting credit card companies to help you out may be difficult in cases like this where a bankruptcy is involved. (As I understand the specifics of the Circuit City case, normally your credit card company will just "charge back" the merchant in question, but in this case the merchant is going out of business and has federal bankruptcy protection during the process.)
It's not just big ticket items that can be dead on arrival. Consider this $7.50 "bargain" video game purchased from a Circuit City store, which appears to have been chewed up by a robot.
No doubt there are still some good deals to be found in these liquidating stores, but remember that, now more than ever, "buyer beware" is the rule of the day. "
(from yahoo! tech blog - Feb. 28, 2009)

Sometimes, you get what you pay for. Long story short - don't be too over zealous to find a "good" deal and be careful with your cash.

Oops

Ok - So, I have to learn how to manage my life AND make time to blog each day, huh?
Well, I meant to publish a post yesterday and actually logged in, but it never happened. Such is life, right? Well, I missed you...

Today is Monday, February 23
It's a sunny day filled with new opportunity!
And, thanks to some retailers, yesterday's paper was filled with coupons and sales circulars!
Therefore, I'll be going to CVS and hopefully Walgreens today to get some deals. And, since today is Monday, I'll be receiving a free Red Box movie code. After volunteering this afternoon, I'm going to Harris Teeter to get my free movie and to do some shopping - at a DEEP discount.
For more info on the free movie code, be sure to sign up for the free daily newsletter at www.becentsable.net. And, to learn how to do your shopping for 1/2 off (at least), as me about attending a coupon workshop!

Gold Bond lotion

Ok - I'm not getting paid for this, but...
I must really say that this Gold Bond lotion is nice.
Of course I purchased it because it was on sale AND I had a coupon, but I used it for the first time today. I usually have sensitive skin, but it hasn't made me itch. It makes my skin feel smooth. It's moisturizing and non-greasy. It has pleasant smell too - nothing too strong or perfumey.
I'd buy this again and I'd recommend to a friend.

It's Friday!!

Happy Friday!
Yesterday was a very busy day. I was exhausted, but blessed.
The staff at Fox News Rising Charlotte are very nice. They asked a lot of questions. I'm sure that is money saving info is valuable and useful to everyone - not just during the times of ecomonic crisis.

The Gaston County Public Library opened their auditorium for my workshop. That was very kind of them. The workshop was a success. Any time that someone is eager to learn about not only improving their life, but the lives of those in their community, it's a blessing. I look forward to conducting many more workshops, meeting new people, and encouraging new educators.

A new BeCentsAble educator told me about an upcoming triple coupon event at Bloom.
I'm excited! Enjoy the sunny day!

The BIG day

Today is the big day -
Fox News Charlotte - Fox News Rising this morning at 7:00 a.m.

Coupon Workshop this afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
Gaston County Public Library
1555 E. Garrison Blvd
Gastonia, NC
Proceeds to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank - Charlotte, NC

Unfortunately, I'm still on a training class at 1:00 a.m., so I won't be getting much sleep. But, I'm positive that I'll be able to present myself well and be articulate while presenting how much money I've saved on my purchases. I know that of the hundreds of thousands of people that see the program, at least 10 will attend the afternoon workshop and at least 100 will contact me to schedule a workshop or to become an educator.

Anticipation

On Thursday, February 19, 2009 I'm going to be on Fox News Charlotte - Fox News Rising.
This will be my 2nd appearance on Fox News, but this time I'll actually be going to the studio. I'm a BeCentsAble Savings Educator - www.becentsable.net

You know when you have good news to share and you want to tell the world, but don't know where to start? Here's what's going through my mind - make up (because I usually don't wear any, but don't want to look washed out on TV), what to wear (because I usually wear t-shirts and jeans, but I'll be on TV in front of who knows how many people), what to bring (I'll be talking about the great deals that I've gotten and the money that I've saved, but I've gotten so many deals - how do I narrow it down so that the info is applicable to everyone?), my workshop (I really want people to come - not just for me, but b/c there really are life changing tips that will be presented)

Well, God's plan will prevail. Worry is not of Him, so I know that everything will work out.
I will speak clearly and slowly, remember to give the correct website (.net), be charming, and inform the masses of coupon parties and inspire them all to either have one or attend one! :o)

How exciting!

Ok...I have to be honest -
I created a blog a while ago (at least a year ago) and never really kept up with it. So, I guess my thoughts are out in cyber-space somewhere. But, I will follow through with this blog. Esp, because I have so many great ideas and such valuable info to share with the world! So, stay tuned...
